Eight Runs By No. 8 Salisbury Thwart Lady Lions

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Piedmont fell hard to No. 8 Salisbury in the opening game of the Early Bird Tournament at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC Friday morning. The Lady Lions recorded just one hit and were plagued by a few errors early on as well as a two-run and three-run homer in the second inning.
Box Score

Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Lions couldn't withstand the powerful Salisbury Sea Gulls offense, which poured out seven runs over the first two frames in an 8-1 blowout win in the opening game of the Early Bird Tournament at Methodist University.  No. 8 Salisbury took advantage of a few miscues and hit batsmen early on, and Piedmont was left chasing the rest of the way.

The pitching of senior Erika Brittingham shut down and dominated the Lady Lions, throwing a one-hitter while striking out half a dozen. She also helped defeat PC at the plate with a 2-run jack in the second inning that also featured a 3-run homer by another Sea Gulls hitter.

The Lady Lions were behind 2-0 after the top of the first, but cut the deficit in half when junior Megan McClain singled, then came around to score on an RBI groundout by senior Emily Cheek.  A golden opportunity slipped away for the women in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two out, but couldn't come up with a clutch hit.

Piedmont's second game was to be played against NC Wesleyan at 11:00, but rain postponed it until tomorrow morning at 10:30.  Piedmont, fresh off Head Coach Terry Martin's 300th and 301st career wins to open the season, are now 2-1 heading into tomorrow's games against NC Wesleyan, Roanoke and Methodist University.
