Lynchburg, VA - Take away the middle quarters and Piedmont beats Randolph College, but the WildCats outscored the Lions 9-2 in the middle periods to take the 12-8 final. Piedmont opened its men's lacrosse history with a hard-fought loss, but showed signs of a good start and solid finish.
It was
Steve Blanchard who came up with an unassisted goal to get the visitors going just two-plus minutes into action, then with 11:07 to go, he assisted
John Sumner Gantz to put the men up 2-0. Randolph tallied a goal in the closing minutes of the first quarter to cut the deficit in half. Two WildCats goals in a 15-second span game Randolph its first lead, but Piedmont struck with a
Patrick Ammons goal, assisted again by Blanchard, to tie things up for the next 39 seconds before the home team was at it again with another go-ahead goal.
The Ammons-Blanchard routine kicked in again with 1:55 remaining in the half, but the Lions still trailed 5-4 before surrendering a quick goal just 21 seconds later. The WildCats found four unanswered goals in the decisive third quarter, giving them a 10-4 edge going into the last 15 minutes of play.
Max Rowse and
Nicholas Green were the first to notch goals in the fourth, pulling within 10-6 midway through the final period. However, the goals were quickly erased by a pair shortly after by Randolph College to regain the six-goal lead.
Blanchard added his fourth assist of the game when Green scored again, and Ammons tallied his third goal with just 11 seconds left on the clock on Green's pass. The 0-1 Piedmont men's lacrosse team will play again Saturday at noon at Rhodes College.
