Box Score ATLANTA, Georgia – The Piedmont College women's basketball team fell to 4-4 overall on the season Saturday with a 70-56 non-conference road loss at Emory University in EU's Woodruff PE Center. The game marked the first contest since December 2 as the Lady Lions returned back to action following a 26-day break.
Emory led for the majority of the early stages in the opening half and held a 17-11 advantage with 13:47 left in the stanza. However, the Lady Lions fought back with a 15-6 charge, capped by a three-point field goal by
MARY KATE RUSHTON, that would give the visitors a 26-23 edge with 5:58 left. The Eagles then held Piedmont scoreless for the remainder of the half to take a 32-26 lead at the intermission.
Emory pushed its margin to 43-31 early in the second half following an 11-2 run. Piedmont drew to within seven points with 14:23 left on the clock, but the Eagles would build its lead back to 13 points at 58-45 with 6:46 remaining after a basket by Jackson. The Lions countered with a 9-0 run over a 58-second span on the strength of three three-point field goals to creep back to within a 58-54 score, but that was as close as they would get as the Emory defense clamped down on the comeback, holding Piedmont scoreless over a 3:36 span while scoring six unanswered points to take a 64-54 lead with 1:41 remaining.
ALYSSA JONES (11 points) and
LAUREN HAMEL (10 point) would be the only two Lady Lions to reach double figures in scoring. Kiki Thompson added nine points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Piedmont was outrebounded 53-42 on the afternoon and gave up 22 offensive rebounds to the Eagles.
Misha Jackson (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Danielle Landry (15 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles to lead Emory (9-1).
Piedmont returns to action on Friday, January 4 with a home USA South Athletic Conference game against rival Maryville College with tip-off set for 5:30 PM in Cave Arena.
