DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's basketball shut down Maryville in the second half in a 60-49 CCS Tournament First Round win inside Cave Arena Tuesday night.

Three days after a blistering offensive performance put them in position to host the Scots in this first round game, the Lions showcased versatility with a dominant defensive performance in the second half Tuesday.

The win pushes the Lions into the semifinals and keeps their CCS Tournament Title defense alive, as they will take on No. 1 seed LaGrange this Friday on the road.

The frontcourt duo of Gracie Deetz and Alexandria Willis produced strong performances inside on Tuesday, as both delivered double-doubles. After a 15-point, 11-rebound performance on Saturday against the Scots, Deetz tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench on the day she was named CCS Sixth Woman of the Year.

Willis led Piedmont in scoring, with 11 points to go with 11 rebounds, her seventh double-double of the season. Although they were the only two in double figures, Riley Bryan added eight points while Kylie Watkins and Hayley Borino tallied seven each.

The highest scoring quarter was the first, with both teams finding success in the paint. Maryville led for the opening five minutes before the Lions reeled off an 11-1 run and took an 18-14 edge to the second quarter.

However, the Scots scored six straight to open the second, holding Piedmont scoreless for nearly four minutes. The Lions were able to break the cold spell on a jumper from Watkins, pushing them to a slim 30-28 lead at the break.

The second half story was Piedmont's stifling defense, holding Maryville to just six field goals and 21 points. The Scots led 41-35 late in the third quarter, but once again, the Lions were resilient, battling back with an 8-0 run over the final 3:21 of the period.

Clinging to a slim lead down the stretch, Piedmont's defense was swarming, holding the Scots scoreless until 2:02 remained in the game and holding them without a made field goal until the final seconds and the outcome was decided.

The Lions iced the game away at the foul line and will advance to the semifinals at LaGrange, Georgia to face the host Panthers on Friday.

TURNING POINT:
- After trailing 41-35 with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter, the Lions outscored the Scots 25-8 the rest of the way.
