Golf Teams Make Clean Sweep At Georgia Mountains Trophy

Both PC golf teams earned team and medalist honors at he Georgia Mountains Trophy this evening at the Kingwood Resort in Clayton.
Clayton, GA -- The Piedmont College men's and women's golf teams made a clean sweep of championships today as the squads laid claim to the Georgia Mountains Trophies at the Kingwood Resort.  The event features the small colleges of northeast Georgia competing each fall for annual rights to the rotating trophy.

On the men's side, the Lions rallied from third place after day one to claim a four-stroke victory over runner-up Young Harris College.  Piedmont carded a tournament score of 305-308--613 to earn the trophy for the third time in the past four years.  PC trailed YHC by four strokes after the opening round. 

Individually, PC's Ritchie Etheredge earned honors with a 72-76--148 (+8) over the par 70 course.  Etheredge outlasted Truett-McConnell's Devin Broadway in a one-hole sudden playoff to earn his first career title.  His performance was highlighted by a 31 (-4) on his back nine on the first day. 

Joining Etheredge on the All-Tournament team was fellow freshamn MARSHALL VOIGHT (75-76--151).   Additionally, both the Lions' 36-hole score and Etheredge's individual score set new GMT scoring records. 

On the women's Piedmont posted a 315-337--652 to finish 12-strokes ahead of runner-up Young Harris.  PC led YHC by 12 strokes after the opening round as both teams posted identical 337's on the final day which featured a series of tough pin placements. 

Sophomore KATARINA HODGE claimed her second tournament title of the year as she earned medalist honors with a 72-77--149.  Teammate MARIA CARTER joined Hodge on the All-Tournament team with a 79-84--163. 

Hodge's 36-hole total set a pair of new school records bettering the single round mark with her one-over 72 on opening day and her total score of seven-over inking a new individual 36-hole record.

The rotating even was hosted by Truett-McConnell and is set to be hosted by Young Harris College next fall at Old Union Golf Club in Blairsville. 

Both PC teams will return to action on October 3-4 when the teams travel to Rome, GA to take part in the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Classic hosted by Berry College at Stonebridge Golf Club and Coosa Country Club.
