Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball woke up late to grab a split with the visiting Lady Hawks of Huntingdon College who handed the Lady Lions their first loss in Great South Athletic Conference play in the 2011 season. Huntingdon stole a 4-1 victory in game one before the Lady Lion bats came alive to run-rule the Lady Hawks in a 9-0 shutout which lasted just the minimum five innings.

Huntingdon struck first in game number one of today's doubleheader as the visitors tallied three runs over the first two innings of play. That 3-0 lead came courtesy of seven hits off the usually stingy Piedmont hurler #B.J. Cofer# who gave up 14 base knocks on the day as she picked up her seventh loss of 2011.

It was in the top of the fifth where the Lady Lions began to battle back as a pair of consecutive triples led to Piedmont's first score of the day. After second baseman Rebecca Renfroe led off the PC fifth with a triple, shortstop Megan McClain quickly gapped a Lady Hawk pitch into left center to bring her teammate in to score.

That Lady Lion run cut the deficit down to two scores as Huntingdon stayed ahead 3-1 heading into the top of sixth. However, Piedmont could not quite get their offense to click in game one as the squad would score only once in the eventual 4-1 loss.

In game two, it was the home team that would take charge this time around as the Lady Lions used nine runs scored over the third and fourth innings to put away the Lady Hawks early in a five-inning decision. Piedmont kicked off the bottom of the third with three straight singles to load the bases for their best scoring chance of the day in a scoreless 0-0 tie at the time.

With the bags juiced, two straight Lady Lions went down by way of fly-outs making the home town fans nervous that a scoring opportunity in the tight game would be lost. However, catcher EMILY CHEEK put the PC fans at ease with a two-RBI single that scored teammates Rebecca Renfroe and Taylor Morgan, a strike that sparked a three-run third.

Senior #B.J. Cofer# then came up big with a RBI single later in the inning to put the Lady Lions up 3-0 after three. The fourth inning would be more of the same for PC at the plate as the home squad once again exploded offensively tabbing six scores on seven hits in the inning.

After Morgan reached on a fielder's choice, Renfroe's second triple of the day sent her teammate around to score extending PC's lead to 4-0. Four more Lady Lions would pick up RBI base knocks in the inning including Cheek who picked up a pair of RBIs on a single through the left field side.

A 9-0 lead was more than enough for freshman pitcher Brittney Head to finish off the Lady Hawks in the top of the fifth as the youngster sat down all three Huntingdon batters she saw in the frame. Head was a monster once again on the mound going five innings scattering just three hits in shutout fashion to pick up her eighth victory of her freshman season – the most wins on the mound by a freshman since Cofer picked up 15 in her debut season in 2008.

The Lady Lions leading hitter on the day was Rebecca Renfroe who posted her best day at the plate this season hitting .600 including a perfect two for two showing in game #2. The sophomore second baseman led the team in runs scored with three, total bases with seven, and on-base percentage reaching at a .600 clip while also legging out two triples on the afternoon.

Right behind her fellow infielder was the shortstop Megan McClain who hit .571 at the dish with a pair of RBIs and runs scored. Knocking in four Lady Lions was Emily Cheek who reached at a .429 rate while hitting .333 in the pair of league games.

The Lady Lions move to 16-10 overall while also going to 7-1 in conference play holding on to the first place spot in the GSAC standings. Piedmont will now travel to LaGrange, GA to take on the Panthers of LaGrange College for an April 14 doubleheader set to begin at 5:00.
