Macon, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team experienced their first Great South Athletic Conference tournament loss since the 2009 season earlier this afternoon getting shutout 3-0 by the fourth seeded Panthers of LaGrange College. PC could not get any offensive momentum going as no Lady Lion posted a multi-hit performance for the tournament's top seed who now faces an elimination game with sixth seeded Wesleyan College tomorrow morning.
Senior pitcher #B.J. Cofer# looked to have the Lady Lions on course for an easy day at the park not allowing a hit over the first two innings of this afternoon's showdown. However, four straight singles from LaGrange in the top of the third led to three runs and a 3-0 lead for the #4 seed through three.
The three spot in the third would be enough for the Panthers to grab a shutout victory over the tournament's top seed as the LC pitching continued to keep the Piedmont hitting at bay. The victory moves LaGrange into the winner's side of the tournament bracket while the Lady Lions move into an elimination contest against the hosting Pioneers of Wesleyan College.
Five Lady Lions picked up a single hit each for the sqaud on the afternoon while Cofer took the loss on the mound to move to 10-8 on the year. Providing a bright spot in today's touranment loss was shortstop
Megan McClain whose leadoff base knock extended the youngster's hitting streak to 13 games, the longest of her 2011 campaign.
The loss drops PC to 22-13 overall and 0-1 in the GSAC tourney so far. The Lady Lions must now ready for a win-or-go-home Saturday that begins with a 10:00 morning showdown with the hosting Pioneers.
