Rome, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team was swept in doubleheader action earlier today by the Vikings of Berry College who took two home games from the Lady Lions. Berry waltzed its way to a 7-0 game one victory before getting a walk-off win in game two to seal the two game sweep of PC as the Vikings have taken three of their last four games against a Great South Athletic Conference member school.
Piedmont dropped game one in shutout fashion 7-0 as starting #B.J. Cofer# allowed seven runs with four earned in six innings of work. The senior did manage to strikeout five Viking batters but could not keep the Berry bats from making solid contact throughout the day.
At the plate in the opener,
Taylor Morgan led the way with her two for four game while Cofer added a hit at the dish. Also tossing in base knocks was freshman
Amanda Posey and sophomore
Rebecca Renfroe.
In game two, the Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings but could not pull away from Piedmont as starting pitcher
Brittney Head settled in to keep PC close. The Lady Lions then rallied with a three-run sixth inning to tie the ballgame up at three a piece with a pair of RBIs from
Jamie Dennis and another run batted in from catcher
Lauren Head.
However, PC's offense once again went silent in the seventh as the two headed to the bottom of the final inning still deadlocked at 3-3. The Vikings would then hand the Lady Lions their second walk-off loss in the last six games with a score to take a 4-3 victory over Piedmont for the sweep.
Freshman
Brittney Head allowed nine hits and four earned runs in her game two start while also striking out a Viking at the plate. Offensively, Dennis and
Lauren Head were the leaders with their RBI base hits while sister Brittney and freshman outfielder
Courtney Clark each added a hit to the cause.
The pair of losses puts PC at 13-9 on the year as the squad has now dropped six of their last seven. The Lady Lions will now turn their attention to a conference doublheader with Agnes Scott College on Tuesday, April 4 with the first game set to start at 5:00 in Decatur, GA on the ASC campus.
