Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team continued to roll earlier this afternoon posting a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Lady Scots of Maryville College in Great South Athletic Conference action at Walker Athletic Complex. Both games ended in the sixth inning as Piedmont rattled off a 9-1 victory in the opener before shutting out the visitors in game two for an 8-0 win completing the two-game sweep.
The Lady Scots took the only lead they would see on the day with a run in the top of the third only to see PC wipe it quickly away with a two spot in the bottom half of the same inning. Accounting for the two runs batted in was shortstop
Megan McClain and
Jamie Dennis as McClain tripled in
Rebecca Renfroe before Dennis' sac fly sent the PC shortstop across home one batter later.
The score remained unchanged until the Piedmont bats imposed their will in a five-run fifth that featured four RBI base hits including
Amanda Posey's two-RBI single that scored teammates
Megan Kesler and
Amy Thompson. Kesler also batted in a run earlier in the inning while Dennis added another as well and pitcher #B.J. Cofer# contributed to her own cause with a run-scoring single.
After surging to a 7-1 lead through five, the game was never again in doubt especially with the senior Cofer on the mound for PC. The wiley veteran went all six innings for Piedmont allowing a measly four hits and a lone earned run striking out four on the way to her tenth win of the season.
Heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Lions needed just two more scores to end the game early with the eight-run rule and responding in such a situation for the second time in two days was junior catcher
Emily Cheek. The power hitter stepped up with two outs and one on to power her third home run in the previous three games handing Piedmont a 9-1 victory in six innings.
Game two was a virtual repeat of the day's opener as the Lady Lions could smell their second straight GSAC title in the air with a victory that would clinch another crown. The home team wasted little time getting out in front using a two-RBI single from Cheek who continued to have the hot bat giving PC a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Lady Lions again tallied another five-run fifth inning as Piedmont refused to be denied at the plate with Kesler and Cofer each picking up two-RBI basehits with Cofer's coming in a pinch hitting situation. Cheek added another run batted in, her 11th of the weekend, to round out the Piedmont fifth with the Lady Lions ahead 7-0 through five.
Lost amongst the offensive fireworks was the handy work of freshman pitcher
Brittney Head who had a no-hitter going through five and two thirds as the youngster shutdown the nation's top hitter in the process. Head finished the day with perfect ERA allowing just the one hit while striking out six in her six innings of work.
For the third time in the last four games, Piedmont would end on an
Emily Cheek hit as the junior knocked a single to score McClain ending game two in six as well with an 8-0 shutout. The victory handed Head her 11th win of the season and gave the Lady Lions the GSAC regular season title with a number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Cheek had perhaps one of the best weekends by a Lady Lion in the storied history of the successful program going 11 for 14 (.786) in four games picking up 12 RBIs while scoring three times herself. The junior belted three homers slugging 1.500 on the weekend while posting a .600 on-base percentage.
The Lady Lions are now 22-10 overall and finish league play with an 11-1 mark with its lone blemish coming last Saturday in a doubleheader split with Huntingdon. Piedmont takes a few days off before hosting the #2 team in the land in the Emory Eagles on Thursday, April 21 for a doubleheader set to start at 2:00 at Walker Athletic Complex.
