Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team got all the offense they needed earlier this afternoon to sail past visiting Covenant College with a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Scots at Walker Athletic Complex. The Lady Lions were held scoreless in only three of their 12 innings at the plate on the afternoon envoking the eight-run rule for a 10-2 win in six innings in game one before completing the sweep with an 8-2 victory in game two.

In today's opener, the home team tallied two runs in each of the first four innings to put the Lady Scots in a hole they would not be able to dig out of.  The day started off right for Head Coach Terry Martin as leadoff hitter Megan McClain's single and pair of stolen bases put the shortstop at third with two outs applying early pressure to the Covenant pitching.

Catcher Emily Cheek then stepped up to blast the first of two homers on the day drilling a Covenant pitch to straight away center giving the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead.  Piedmont then continued to pour it on in the bottom of the second as Megan Kesler and Amanda Posey both picked up RBIs to double up the margin at 4-0 PC.

Two more runs in the bottom of the third for Piedmont came courtesy of a two-RBI single from Amy Thompson who went two for four as one of four Lady Lions to hit .500 or better on the day.  After a solo home run from Covenant gave the Lady Scots their first score of the day in the top of the fourth, McClain legged out her fifth triple of the season to drive in a run in the bottom half of the same fram while Jamie Dennis laid down a sac bunt for her team-leading 18th RBI of the season.

The Lady Scots nabbed another run in the top of the sixth to extend the game down by six, but Cheek's second home run of the day in the bottom of the sixth gave the home team the eight run lead they need to end the contest early winning 10-2 in six.

Game two was just more of the same as the Piedmont bats continued to stay red hot with the Lady Lions again jumping out to a big lead tallying eight runs over the first four innings of play while holding Covenant scoreless through four.

The scoring began with a three-spot in the first inning as McClain led off the game once more with a single as her teammate Dennis tripled in the shortstop one batter latter for a 1-0 lead.  Centerfielder Taylor Morgan then doubled in Dennis for a 2-0 margin just before Cheek collected her fifth RBI of the day with a single that sent Morgan across home.

In the PC second, Morgan would keep the scoring going with a two-RBI single that put the team up 5-0 as the Lady Lions continued to roll at the plate.  The home team added another three runs over the next two frames for a 8-0 shutout lead through four for the second time on the afternoon.

Although Covenant would chip in a pair of single run innings late, the damage had already been done offensively by Piedmont with their 15 game two hits.  Freshman pitcher Brittney Head was up to the task on the mound as she went a complete game allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out nine on the day.

For Head, the win was her tenth of 2011 as the youngster's nine strikeouts moved her season total to 84 just 16 shy of 100 in her debut campaign in Demorest.  Also grabbing a win on the hill was senior #B.J. Cofer# whose game one win included a six-inning, four strikeout performance.

Posting a monster day offensively was Emily Cheek who was perfect in her chances at the plate going six for six with a rediculous half dozen RBIs.  Also scoring a pair of runs herself, the junior catcher included a pair of home runs and a double in her daily totals while slugging an outlandish 2.167.

Shortstop Megan McClain was not far behind her teammate as the Bishop native went six for eight at the dish scoring five runs as one of two Lady Lions to slug an even 1.000 in the two-game sweep.  The other was fellow infielder Jamie Dennis who stroked her fourth triple of the season on the way to a two for four afternoon that included a pair of RBIs.

The sweep puts Piedmont at 20-10 overall as the Lady Lions reach the 20-win plateau for the second consecutive season.  PC will now look for its second straight Great South Athletic Conference regular season title as the squad hosts league member Maryville College on Sunday, April 17 for a doubleheader set to start at 1:00.
