Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team salvaged a split with Centre College earlier this afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex to snap a four-game losing skid. The Lady Lions fell short of a come-back victory in game one dropping a 9-6 decision to the Colonels before getting a walk-off 3-2 win in the encore match-up to split the home doubleheader.
In game one, Piedmont allowed visiting Centre to get out to a 4-1 lead over the first six innings of play on seven hits off Lady Lion starting pitcher #B.J. Cofer#. Piedmont's lone run in their first five innings at the plate came on a wild pitch in the third as shortstop
Megan McClain alertly headed home taking advantage of the Colonel mistake.
Despite helping the Colonels with an error that gave Centre its first two runs, Piedmont found itself trailing by just three heading into the bottom of the sixth with a chance to put some runs on the board. The Lady Lions did just so collecting five scores in that sixth frame sparked by a bases-loaded, two-out single from freshman
Amanda Posey that put pinch runner
Jordyn Hammontree across the plate.
After Posey's RBI base hit and with the bases still full of Lady Lions,
Taylor Morgan drew a walk to put another run across just before a McClain single sent
Amy Thompson home safely tying the game up at 4-4.
Jamie Dennis made sure to give the squad a lead before allowing Centre out of its nightmare sixth inning as the third baseman stroked a two-RBI single to put PC up 6-4 heading into the top of the seventh.
Having taken the lead by two needing three outs to complete the comeback win, the Lady Lions would experience their own nightmare in the top of the seventh committing a trio of costly errors that kept the Colonels alive. That Piedmont seventh led to five Centre runs when all was said and done as the visitors proceeded to shut down the Lady Lion bats in the bottom half of the same frame for a 9-6 victory.
In game two, it was the Lady Lions who jumped out to a lead on another
Megan McClain run in the bottom of the fifth. Piedmont's time in front would be short-lived however as the Colonels grabbed a pair of scores in the next half inning to go in front 2-1 taking the Lady Lions to their final inning at bat in the bottom of the seventh.
However, the Lady Lions refused to let another game get away as
Amanda Posey posted her fifth hit of the day to reach safely while the next PC batter,
Courtney Clark, drew a walk to put runners at first and second for
Megan McClain. The shortstop delivered with a single over the head of Centre's third baseman that skipped away from the Colonel's leftfielder scoring both Posey and Clark for the walk-off 3-2 victory.
Getting the win on the mound was freshman
Brittney Head who goes to 6-3 in her debut campaign for Piedmont. The young arm tossed a complete game giving up just two runs on seven hits striking out four on the day.
Offensively, newcomer
Amanda Posey had her best day yet at the plate as a Lady Lion going five for seven (.714) while collecting a RBI and scoring a pair of runs including the game-tying run in game two. McClain also swung the bat well going four for seven with a trio of RBIs and a run scored slugging .857.
The split moves the Lady Lions to 13-7 on the year as PC is 6-4 in their last ten games. Piedmont will now have a week off from competition before traveling to Berry College for an afternoon doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 with game one set to start at 1:00.
