Atlanta, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team could not recover from a heartrbeaking loss in game one of a doubleheader with the nation's new #1 team in Emory University earlier this afternoon as the Lady Lions dropped both games to the Eagles. Emory received a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh in today's first game to slip past visiting PC before posting a 5-0 shutout in game two to take a pair of wins from Piedmont.
The Eagles had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one prior to needing a last minute homer as Emory had posted a pair in the first before adding another score in the bottom of the fifth. However, the Lady Lions clawed back into the match-up with Emory with a three-spot in the top of the sixth to tie the ball game up at three a piece.
That rally in the top of the sixth was sparked by a
Megan McClain single as the Piedmont shortstop would later move across on a sac bunt from
Jamie Dennis though Dennis would reach on an error from the Eagles' pitcher. Outfielder
Raley White picked up a RBI putting McClain across while Dennis also scored later on a single from pitcher #B.J. Cofer#.
After the Lady Lion pitcher helped her own cause with a RBI to put the score at 3-2, freshman catcher
Lauren Head continued her recent success at the plate with a single to score pinch runner
Courtney Clark. For Head, the RBI was her ninth in the previous five games as the youngster is hitting .310 in her debut season.
The three run inning nodded the score at 3-3 and sent the Lady Lions into a pressure situation in the bottom of the seventh as the visiting team attempted to push the game to extras and stay alive. However, the first Eagle batter of the frame put a Cofer pitcher over the wall to hand #1 Emory a walk-off 4-3 victory spoiling the upset bid of the Lady Lions.
Piedmont never recovered in game two allowing Emory to post three runs in the bottom of the third and another pair of scores in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-0 win as the Eagles took both games of the doubleheader. The victories for the home team keep the country's new #1 team undefeated record unscathed as their winning streak moves to 26 on the season.
Cofer and
Brittney Head picked up the losses on the mound as Cofer tossed game one and Head took the ball in game two. Cofer allowed four on nine hits while Head also gave up four runs scattering six hits as each pitcher struck out a batter respectively.
Cofer helped her own cause going two for six at the plate with a RBI while the shortstop McClain went two for seven with a run scored. Defensively
Jamie Dennis collected six assists on the day at the third base spot without posting an error.
The Lady Lions fall to 12-6 on the season with the losses and move to 2-3 against ranked teams on the year. Piedmont will look to snap a three-game skid when the team hosts Centre College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 set to start at 1:00.
