Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team cruised to a pair of conference victories to open the defense of their 2010 Great South Athletic Conference championship sweeping a doubleheader from Wesleyan College.  The visiting Pioneers failed to put a run on the board in either game as Piedmont took an 8-0 victory in game one before capping the day off with a 14-0 shutout in game two.

The story of the day was Piedmont's pitching as senior #B.J. Cofer and freshman Megan Studdard# combined to allow just five total hits over the two games while posting a pair of shutouts in the wins.  Cofer struck out six in her five inning outing in game one while the freshman Studdard fanned nine in her collegiate pitching debut in game two.

The Lady Lions scored in three of the four innings they had at the bat in game one posting two in the first, two in the second, and four in the fourth.  Those eight runs was enough to end the game after five as Piedmont claimed its first conference win 8-0.

In game two, it was another offensive explosion as the Lady Lions put up 11 runs on five hits and three errors in just the first inning to surge ahead of the visiting Pioneers.  Included in that first frame assault was a bases clearing base hit from shortstop Megan McClain where the speedy infielder came around to score on a Wesleyan fielding error.

After taking the 11-0 lead, young arm Megan Studdard had all she needed to work with as she settled in to retire 12 of the next 13 batters she faced with six of those coming by way of a strikeout.  PC added three runs over their final two innings at bat to close out a 14-0 victory.

Offensively the Lady Lions had a pair of hitters tab four RBIs a piece in newcomer Courtney Clark and the shortstop McClain.  McClain scored four of the team's 22 runs over the two games while Clark also added a pair of runs scored on the afternoon.

Pitcher #B.J. Cofer# helped her own cause out with a 3-for-4 day at the plate collecting two RBIs along the way.  Fellow hurler Megan Studdard also had a good day offensively posting three RBIs as did teammate Jamie Dennis who chipped in three runs scored.

The pair of victories moves Piedmont to 9-3 on the season while begining their conference record at a perfect 2-0.  The Lady Lions will look to move to 4-0 in league play tomorrow with a doubleheader sweep of Spelman College as the Jaguars visit the Walker Athletic Complex for a Sunday, March 20 match-up.  The first pitch is set to throw at 1:00 in the afternoon GSAC showdown.
