Lynchburg Box Score
Fayetteville, NC -- The Piedmont College softball team grabbed a pair of wins earlier today first defeating Methodist University 3-1 before shutting out Lynchburg College 4-0 in an afternoon contest. The Lady Lions got all-star caliber performances from a pair of pitchers who combined to not allow a single earned run in the pair of victories.
In game one, it was the arm of
B.J. Cofer that was the story as the senior pitcher tossed all seven innings of the two run victory over Methodist. Cofer struck out eight batters while not allowing a base on balls and holding the host Monarchs to just three hits on the day.
It was Methodist who struck first in the scoring grabbing a run on a Lady Lion error in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. However, the resilient PC squad got that run right back when
Raley White knocked a base hit that scored teammate
Megan McClain who had reached earlier on a single of her own.
With the score still tied at one each in the bottom of the sixth, Piedmont got the runs they needed as
Jamie Dennis collected a RBI to score pinch runner
Jordyn Hammontree. Dennis would later score herself in the inning to put the game at the final of 3-1.
The Lady Lions collected six hits on the way to earning the two run victory to kick off action in the Early Bird Invitational Tournament at Methodist University.
Piedmont then took on Lynchburg College for an afternoon battle that saw another dominant performance by a Lady Lion on the mound. Young pitcher
Brittney Head threw a complete game shutout of the Hornets fanning 11 Lynchburg batters while walking just a single batter and allowing only a pair of hits.
In a 0-0 game in the third inning, it was Brittney's sister Lauren who provided the offensive help for the family and PC as she stepped up to blast the first home run of her collegiate career. That solo shot sparked a three run inning for the Lady Lions as PC claimed the 4-0 victory.
Dennis once again got the offensive stat sheet as she scored a run in that PC third while outfielder
Taylor Morgan collected a pair of RBIs in Piedmont's fourth win of the season.
The Lady Lions stay undefeated on the year with the pair of tournament wins moving to 4-0 overall. Piedmont will continue tournament play with a 9:00 morning match-up with nationally ranked Christopher Newport University.
