Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team kicked off its 2011 season with a pair of wins over local rival Truett-McConnell College earlier this afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex.  After PC shutout the Bears in game one 4-0, Piedmont would need to overcome an early deficit to recover for the doubleheader sweep taking game two 7-2.

Senior pitcher B.J. Cofer began her final season on campus in dominating fashion yet again with a complete game performance in game one on the mound in her first start of the year.  Cofer tossed all seven innings allowing just four hits and shutting out the Bears lineup to keep a zero on the board in the visiting run column.

In that game one win for PC, Piedmont picked up their first two runs of the day on a pair of RBI doubles as sophomores Taylor Morgan and Megan McClain each collected an extra base hit to score teammates Jamie Dennis and Jordyn Hammontree.  After two innings of play, Piedmont found themselves with an early inning lead 2-0.

The Lady Lions would then grab a run in each of the next two innings as Dennis got in on the RBI action while senior Raley White also picked up an RBI.  The four runs was more than enough for Cofer to get her first win of 2011 handing the veteran arm a 4-0 victory.

In the sequel affair, Piedmont once again jumped on the board first when White knocked a RBI double to score the shortstop McClain in the bottom of the first.  However, Truett-McConnell answered in the next frame with two runs of their own to overtake the lead from the home team at 2-1 after two innings.

The visitors' lead would be shortlived as Head Coach Terry Martin's squad promptly exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third as an Emily Cheek single sparked the run and led to a pair of Lady Lions crossing the plate.  After Dennis knocked a RBI single, Rebecca Renfroe would pick up her first RBI of 2011 on a sacrifice fly while freshman Amanda Posey got the first RBI of her collegiate career a few batters later on a single.

Freshman pitcher Brittney Head came on in relief to make a statement in her Lady Lion debut tossing five and two thirds innings allowing a single hit, no runs, and strike out five.  Head came into a bases loaded, one out situation in the second only to retire the next two batters in order getting the squad out of the inning on the way to collecting the first win of her PC career.

The victories give PC a 2-0 start to 2011 and a break from game action until the squad travels to the Early Bird Tournament at Methodist University next weekend.  The Lady Lions will kick off tournament action on Friday, February 25 with a 10:00 morning game against the host Lady Monarchs.
