Maryville, TN -- The Piedmont College softball team claimed its first Great South Athletic Conference regular season title since 2006 with a doubleheader sweep over rival Maryville College this afternoon. The Lady Lions rolled to a 6-0 game one victory before grabbing a hard fought 9-5 win in game two to earn the #1 seed in the GSAC tournament.
In game one, the Lady Lions would kick off the scoring with a bang after three scoreless innings. Sophomore
Emily Cheek and senior
Michelle Crandall led off the top of the fourth with back-to-back homers to give PC a 2-0 lead.
Piedmont continued to pour on the offense in the top of the seventh as
Megan McClain continued her stellar debut season for the Lady Lions with a two RBI single. PC would then score two more runs on errors by Maryville before holding the home side scoreless in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-0 victory.
#B.J. Cofer# grabbed the win for the Lady Lions on the mound tossing a complete game shutout that included four strikeouts. The junior allowed only two walks en route to the 6-0 win.
Game two was tight throughout as Maryville got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first. Piedmont then struck back with a run of its own in the top of the second on another solo shot from
Michelle Crandall.
PC then scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined on RBI singles from #B.J. Cofer
and Amy Thompson
coupled with a two RBI double from junior Raley White#. Maryville would again fight back with three runs in the home half of the fifth to cut PC's lead to just a single run.
The Lady Lions would hold on tight to the lead and their hopes of a conference title with a three run sixth inning on a two RBI double by
Amy Thompson and an
Emily Cheek RBI single. Piedmont would add a run in the top of the seventh to ensure the 9-5 title-clinching victory.
On the mound for Piedmont, #B.J. Cofer# picked up another win going all seven innings while allowing five runs and fanning three.
The two wins improves PC to 26-10 overall and a 10-2 mark in conference action. With the sweep, the Lady Lions will enter the GSAC championship tournament as the top seed playing their first game at 2:00 on Friday, April 30. Piedmont will await the game one winner of the #4 seed Hawks of Huntingdon College and the #5 Scotties of Agnes Scott College.
