Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team earned a hard fought split against visiting in-state foe Emory University this afternoon at Walker Field. After coming from behind to take a 3-2 win in game one, the Lady Lions would rally again to push game two to extra innings only to fall 10-3 in the eighth.
In game one, the Eagles went ahead early scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Emory's 2-0 lead would remain until the bottom of the fifth inning when PC finally got on the board as freshman
Jamie Dennis knocked a base hit to score teammate
Raley White.
Piedmont then got a go-ahead two RBI single from freshman
Rebecca Renfroe to take its first lead of the day 3-2. The one run advantage would be the final margin of victory as the Lady Lions grabbed the game one win.
Game two drew more drama between the two clubs as it was the home team who would take the early lead this time around when
Raley White doubled to score teammate
Hannah McKay for a 1-0 advantage. Emory would then chip away at PC tying the game in the fifth before adding two more scores in the sixth to jump in front 3-1.
Down by two in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Lions would not go quietly into the night as
Jamie Dennis led off with a single and eventually scored on a triple from
Rebecca Renfroe. Renfroe then scored on an error to nod the score at three a piece pushing game two to extra innings.
Emory then took control in the top of the eighth scoring seven runs to break the finale wide open. The margin proved to be too much for the host Lady Lions who dropped the 10-3 decision.
Pitcher
Megan Kesler took the tough loss allowing seven earned runs on twelve hits for her seventh loss of the season.
With the split, PC moves to 24-10 overall while finishing play at Walker Field for the season with a 12-2 home record. The Lady Lions will round out regular season play with a decisive conference doubleheader at Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College on Friday, April 23 with game one set to begin at 3:30.
