Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College softball team took game one but could not complete the sweep against Great South Athletic Conference member LaGrange College this afternoon at Walker Field. PC held on for a game one thriller 2-1 before falling in the encore 4-2 to the Panthers.
Game one was tight throughout with Piedmont grabbing a first inning one run lead on a
Rebecca Renfroe RBI single. The Lady Lions would add on in the third when
Megan Kesler knocked a base hit to score teammate
Megan McClain.
LaGrange battled back grabbing a run with only one out in the top of the seventh to cut PC's advantage in half. Clinging to a one run lead with a Panther runner on third base, the Lady Lions then received a stellar defensive play by outfielder
Hannah McKay who caught a fly ball and then threw home to complete a game winning double play preserving a 2-1 victory.
Pitcher #B.J. Cofer# went the distance for PC on the mound earning her fifteenth win while allowing a single run and only four hits in seven innings of work. The junior also struck out five and gave up a walk for the first time since a 1-0 victory over Covenant College on March 31.
In game two, the Lady Lions struck first again on a RBI single from freshman
Amy Thompson to go up 1-0. The lead would not hold up as LaGrange used a three run fourth inning to jump ahead for the first time on the day.
After the Panthers tacked on another score in the top of the seventh, PC would pull to within two with another RBI hit from
Rebecca Renfroe. The two-out rally fell short with LaGrange hanging on for a 4-2 win.
Freshman
Megan Kesler took the loss dropping her season record to 6-6. The Colbert, GA native went three and two thirds innings allowing three runs and six hits while striking out two.
The split moves Piedmont to 21-9 overall and 6-2 in GSAC play. The Lady Lions will return to action on Monday, April 19 when they play host to another conference foe in Agnes Scott College with the doubleheader set to start at 5:00.
