Junior B.J. Cofer allowed only one earned run in two appearances as the Lady Lions earned a split to open the Ferrum College Invitational.
Salem, VA -- The Piedmont College softball team split its first two games of the Ferrum College Invitational this afternoon.  After the Lady Lions fell to Roanoke College 2-1 in the opener, PC salvaged the effort with a 7-4 win over Peace College.

In the Roanoke game, Piedmont opened the scoring when Emily Cheek collected the lone RBI for the Lady Lions scoring teammate Raley White to take a one run lead.

The Maroons struck back late in the top of the seventh scoring a run to tie the game at 1-1.  The rally would not end there as Roanoke tallied another run in the top of the ninth to eventually claim the 2-1 victory.

#B.J. Cofer# took the tough luck loss pitching all nine innings allowing only one earned run and striking out five.  White contributed at the plate going 1-3 while scoring Piedmont's only run in the bottom of the first.

In the Peace game, PC again raced out to an early lead scoring three runs in the opening frame on a RBI double from freshman Jamie Dennis and a Megan Kesler RBI single.  Though the Lady Lions would tack on another run in the fourth, Peace rallied in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at four a piece.

The score would remain unchanged until a late surge by Piedmont in the top of the seventh.  Rebecca Renfroe broke the tie with an RBI double putting PC ahead for good.

PC would add two more runs in a productive seventh, but one was all the Lady Lions needed as they held on for 7-4 victory.

The split keeps Piedmont even for the season at 2-2 overall.  The Lady Lions will return to action when they face host Ferrum College on Monday, March 15 in doubleheader action with game one beginning at 2:00.
