Lady Lions Split Opening Day Of GSAC Tournament

In the opening game of the 2009 GSAC softball tournament in LaGrange, GA Emily Cheek led the offense going 3-4 with a pair of RBI's in the Lady Lions' victory over Wesleyan College.
LaGrange, GA -- In the first day of the 2009 Great South Athletic Conference softball tournament the Piedmont College softball team posted a 1-1 record winning the opener but falling in the second game this afternoon in LaGrange, GA. The #4 seeded Lady Lions defeated #5 Wesleyan College 8-1 but fell to top-seeded Maryville College 8-7.

In the opener PC exploded with 13 hits and scored in all but one inning to cruise to the seven-run victory. Emily Cheek paced the offense going 3-4 with a pair of runs batted in while four teammates posted two hits respectively. On the mound Lindsay Drevlow picked up her seventh victory going six innings striking out seven while walking none.

The Lady Lions jumped out with three runs on two hits in the top of the first inning against #1 Maryville in the second round. The Scots responded with four runs on six hits to retake the lead in the home half. PC would answer with two runs in the fourth and sixth inning to take a commanding 7-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

The Scots capitilized on a pair of errors to record four unearned runs in the final at-bat to steal the 8-7 win and advance in the winners bracket.

Piedmont, now 14-16 overall, will play an elimination game tomorrow, April 26th against Agnes Scott College beginning at noon.
