On their first day of its 2007 Spring Break trip the Piedmont College softball team split a doubleheader with host Millsaps College in Jackson, MS winning game one in ten innings 15-13 but then falling in the second game by the score of 7-5. The Lady Lions exploded offensively in game one notching a season-high 19 hits but could only muster five runs on seven hits in the finale.
In game one Megan Day led the offense with five hits, three runs scored, and a pair of RBI's. Emily Maxey exploded in the cleanup spot with four hits and a season-high six RBI's. After going into extra innings and matching runs in both the eighth and ninth innings the Lady Lions used a Maxey single for the eventual game-winning run and a Nicole Payne two-out double for insurance and held on for the two-run victory.
In the second game the Lady Lions held a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning but Millsaps rallied to plate four runs and hold on to the two-run lead in the top of the seventh. Michelle Broderick went 5 1/3 innings allowing four earned runs while striking out five and took the no-decision.
The split moves Piedmont to 9-4 overall. The women will return to action again tomorrow, March 6th as they travel to Mississippi College in Clinton, MS with the doubleheader game time set for 4:00 CST.Â
