The Piedmont College softball team opened the 2007 season at the Emory University Invitational this weekend and came away with a victory and a pair of losses. In the first game on Saturday the Lady Lions defeated Millsaps College by the score of 3-1 but dropped two games this afternoon at the hands of Greensboro College 2-1 and tournament host Emory University 3-1.
Against Millsaps, senior Meredith Ray went the distance for her first victory of the season allowing one earned run while striking out four. The Lady Lions scored all three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Emily Maxey connected on a one out double that plated Michelle Broderick and Marissa Harding. Maxey leter scored on a two out double from Nicole Payne.
PC's offense was shut down this afternoon as the Lady Lions were held to a mere seven hits against Greensboro and Emory and scored only one run in both games. Against GC Ray led the offense with a 2-2 day from the plate including an RBI. The Pride score two runs in the second, which proved to be the game winners. Ray also took the tough luck loss on the mound pitching a complete game allowing one earned run while striking out five.
Against EU the Lady Lions could only muster a pair of hits and were shutout for the first time in the young season. Lindsay Drevlow went 1-2 while Broderick added a 1-3 day. Ray took the loss on the mound allowing only one earned run in six innings of work. PC notched a pair of errors that led to four unearned runs in the defeat.
Piedmont now stands at 1-2 overall. The Lady Lions will return to action again on Tuesday, February 20th as they host non-conference opponent North Greenville University in a doubleheader starting at 2:00.
