Lions Storm Past Tornados with 12-2 Win in Seven Innings

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 12, Brevard 2
Records: Piedmont, 21-9; Brevard, 14-16

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Lions secured the lead early and rode a strong pitching performance from the Piedmont staff to a 12-2 Tuesday win.

The offense once again clicked for the Lions as the lineup wasted no time getting on the board early. Cody Funk led off and came all the way around to score via his CCS-leading 32nd stolen base and a wild pitch from the Brevard starter. Piedmont picked up another off a sacrifice fly, giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the second.

After a scoreless frame tossed by Will Schmidt, the Lions offense got back to work. Cole Ellis stood in with the bases loaded and promptly cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double. The Lions added another run via another sacrifice fly and sat comfortable with a 6-0 lead.

Schmidt pitched well on the other side for the Lions, allowing some traffic but pitching around the danger and shutting out the Tornados through four innings while allowing a pair of runs to score in the fifth.

The Lions' offense continued to add on, striking for one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.

The Piedmont bullpen consisting of Dalton Anderson and Lucas Tritt threw two more scoreless innings, setting up a walk-off opportunity in the bottom of the seventh.

Jack Ryan led the inning off with a booming opposite-field triple and scoring on a Ben Connelly double. Ben Bodoh reached on a walk, and with two runners on, John Dickerson stood in. Dickerson lined a ball into the left-center field gap, scoring both runners and giving the Lions a midweek win.

Piedmont remains one of the top-hitting teams in the CCS as it prepares for more conference action.

Next, the Lions welcome in the Covenant Scots for weekend action, starting Friday, April 10, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Piedmont led the game from the onset and continued to add on to its lead.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Ellis went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs, now leading the Lions with a .455 batting average.
