LAGRANGE, GA.—The Piedmont baseball team suffered its first conference series loss of the season in a one-run contest against the LaGrange Panthers.
In an offense-heavy game, the Lions couldn't find the final run to put them over the top, leading to the loss.
The Lions once again scored early, bringing home three runs in the first from a Cruz Mullinix RBI single and a Davin Miller two-RBI single, giving Piedmont a 3-0 lead.
LaGrange cut into the lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single of its own while scoring another run in the second, cutting the lead to just one run.
Piedmont added on in the third with a pair of RBI hits and a run-scoring error by the Panthers' defense. The three-run inning gave the Lions a 7-2 lead, a cushion for the pitching to work with.
The Panthers' bats were hot, however, cutting into the lead again in the third with three runs.
The Piedmont offense struggled against the LaGrange pitching staff, with the offense limited to seven runs in just the first three innings.
LaGrange scored once again in the fifth, tying the game at seven runs apiece.
Both teams traded zeros in the late innings.
In the ninth, the Panthers reached on two straight singles and moved the winning run onto third base with a sacrifice bunt. With two in scoring position, the LaGrange batter sent a ball to left field, deep enough to score the winning run and securing the series for the Panthers.
Piedmont fell in another late contest as the offense struggled to find runs past the opening innings.
Next, the Lions look to rebound in the series finale against the Panthers, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
