ATLANTA - Piedmont baseball rallied in the late innings, but fell, 6-5, in walkoff fashion to Emory on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
After taking the series opener Friday night in Demorest, the Lions traveled to Atlanta for the middle game of the series, and the Eagles eked out the win in a hard-fought battle.
Trailing by three and down to their final three outs, the Lions were undeterred, scoring twice in the eighth to cut their deficit to one before tying the game in their final at bat. Unfortunately, the Eagles immediately responded in the bottom of the ninth, winning on a walkoff single from Zach Hanson.
It was a well-pitched game on both sides, with just 11 combined hits (six from Piedmont, five from Emory).
Cruz Mullinix was the offensive standout for the Lions, going 3-for-4 with three RBI in the loss.
Piedmont showed its power early, as
Ben Connelly launched a solo home run in the third inning to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.
Emory then answered in the bottom of the frame, singling home a pair of runs to lead 2-1.
The Lions were not down long, as Mullinix delivered the first of his three hits, an RBI double to bring home
Carter Few, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
The game remained tied until the later stages, but the Eagles struck for a run in the sixth and then two more in the seventh to bring the lead to three. After the Emory bullpen was shaky in the series opener Friday, the Eagles' defense put the pitchers in a tough spot in the eighth, committing three errors that led to a pair of Piedmont runs, brought home on a two RBI single from Mullinix.
Down a run in the top of the ninth, the Lions manufactured the tying run thanks to a Connelly leadoff walk and an RBI groundout from pinch hitter
Sean Bailey.
However, it took Emory just three batters to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth, with a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single doing the damage.
Up next, the series will return to Demorest for the finale tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Loudermilk Field.
