Lions Take Rubber Game Against Emory, 12-7

Records: Piedmont, 14-8; Emory 11-8

DEMOREST, Ga. — The Piedmont baseball team took the series against Emory on Sunday, 12-7.

The Lions' offense continued slugging, picking up the pitching and leading the way for Piedmont.

Lane Ayers got the start for Piedmont, and the sophomore retired the side in order in the top of the first.

The offense got right to work in the bottom of the first, loading the bases for Carter Few. Few walked home a run and the Lions added two more runs before ending the first with a 3-0 lead.

Ayers gave up a run with some traffic in the second but navigated the inning well and put the bat back in the hands of the Lions.

Piedmont again put runners on and forced a change on the mound for the Eagles. Cody Funk ambushed the new pitcher with a bunt single, loading the bases for Davin Miller. Miller pulled a 1-0 pitch to right field, clearing the fence for a grand slam. The Lions did not relent as Cole Ellis got on in front of Few, who doubled home Ellis, continuing the slugging parade for Piedmont. The offense brought home two more runs, jumping out to an early 10-1 lead.

With a big lead, Ayers shut down the Eagles in the third, and although he ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing three runs to score, the sophomore got out of the inning with a weak ground ball.

Will Schmidt got the ball out of the pen for the Lions, and despite a shaky fifth inning, allowing two runs, he was solid for the Lions for the rest of the game.

The Lions put up two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning and gave the ball back to Schmidt for the rest of the way.

Schmidt fired three shutout innings before entering the ninth, where he allowed a solo home run before retiring the next two batters to close out the game, picking up the win and giving the Lions the series over the Eagles.

Piedmont's offense once again stands tall through another weekend series.

Next, the Lions will welcome in the Belhaven Blazers for a three-game series starting on Thursday, March 26, at 6 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Davin Miller's second inning grand slam that cemented the Lions' lead.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Will Schmidt allowed just three runs across five innings and collected three strikeouts.
- Davin Miller continues to launch the ball, now leading the Lions in home runs and RBIs.
