MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Piedmont baseball team fell Sunday afternoon to the Maryville Scots 10-2.
The Lions fell behind early and could not stage a big inning to get them back in the contest, as the Scots controlled the game throughout.
While Piedmont opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the top of the first, Maryville answered with a four-run frame.
Starter Layne Ayers was chased early in the second inning as the Scots put two runners on with one away. Will Schmidt came out of the bullpen for the Lions, but the Scots had all the momentum and scored three runs by the end of the inning.
Piedmont scored again in the top of the third as Cole Ellis slugged an RBI double.
With a 7-2 lead, the Scots shut down the Lions for the rest of the game while scoring three more to make the final 10-2.
Despite falling in the finale, the Lions had a strong showing in their first CCS series of the season and are a strong offensive threat in the conference.
Piedmont's next action will be a midweek contest against Brevard on Tuesday, March 17, at 4 p.m. in Brevard, N.C.
