Lions Stumble in Road Loss to Brevard

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Brevard 15, Piedmont 4 F/7
Records: Piedmont, 12-7; Brevard 13-6

BREVARD, N.C. — The Piedmont baseball team was defeated 15-4 Tuesday in a road contest against Brevard.

Despite leading early, the Lions could not escape a big inning from the Tornadoes.

The top of the Lions' order started hot, with Davin Miller and Cole Ellis setting the table for Cruz Mullinix, who singled home Miller. Ellis later scored, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Landon May started for Piedmont, and the Tornadoes answered the Lions' rally in the top of the first with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

May went three innings for the Lions, allowing three runs. After four innings the two squads were tied at 3-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Ben Homansky struggled in a relief effort leading to Brevard scoring 10 runs and running away with the game.

The Tornadoes kept the Lions off the board while scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, growing their lead to 15-3.

Piedmont scored in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to stave off a run rule defeat.

Piedmont had a rare stumble in its midweek contest where the offense couldn't dig out of a midgame hole.

Next, the Lions will return home to face off against Emory in a weekend series, starting Friday, March 20, at 6 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Brevard's 10-run fifth inning that pulled them far from the Lions and gave them the eventual win.
