Men's Tennis Takes 6-1 Win at Guilford to Highlight Saturday Split

NEED TO KNOW:
Match 1 Score: Va. Wesleyan 4, Piedmont 0
Match 2 Score: Piedmont 6, Guilford 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Piedmont men's tennis captured its first victory of the season Saturday, rolling past Guilford 6-1 to highlight a split in North Carolina.

The Lions bounced back after falling in the morning to Virginia Wesleyan, taking down the Quakers in decisive fashion in the afternoon.

Match 1: Va. Wesleyan 4, Piedmont 0

Playing in a clinch format, the Marlins eked out the doubles point and then clinched the sweep with three straight sets wins in singles.

On the Piedmont side, the match was highlighted by Rohan Kavli and Mark Backeberg's 6-1 doubles win at No. 2. The doubles point was tightly contested. However, the Marlins were victorious, 6-4, at both No. 1 and No. 3 to grab the 1-0 lead and take the momentum into singles.

Match 2: Piedmont 6, Guilford 1

Piedmont responded with strong play across the board, grabbing a key win to return home on a good note.

Two of the three doubles matches were down to the wire. However, the Lions dominated at No. 3, with Charles Parnell and Amir Latipov not dropping a game. At No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, Piedmont needed just one of the two and they took the doubles point on Leyton Dunn and Caleb McElveen's 6-4 win at No. 2.

Needing just three points in singles, Piedmont left no doubt, taking 5-of-6 matches with four of the wins coming in straight sets. Freshman Allan Soto picked up his first dual singles win of his career in dominant fashion, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Fellow freshman Jack Maddox also picked up his first dual win at Piedmont, prevailing 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. Latipov helped the Lions take another point, winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.

Two Lions won hard-fought battles, as junior Brent Sherman won a lengthy three-setter (2--6, 6-3, 6-4), clawing back after dropping the first set to take the second and third. Finally, for the second straight day, sophomore Horacio Rodriguez overcame adversity to earn a victory, winning 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 for the team's final point.

Up next, the Lions will return home and host Oglethorpe this Thursday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m.
