MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Piedmont men's tennis opened its 2025 fall season at the John McWilliams Memorial Tournament, hosted by Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama over Friday and Saturday of last weekend.
It was a successful debut for a number of Lions, with nine athletes competing against athletes from four different schools (Wallace State, Beville State, Tuskegee and Coastal Alabama CC).
Three Lions delivered a perfect 2-0 performance in singles as junior
Mark Backeberg and sophomores
Rohan Kavali and
Horacio Rodriguez were unblemished over the weekend.
Rodriguez prevailed in a marathon match against Matias Vargas from Wallace State, winning 6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-8 to close out his tournament.
The group also delivered outstanding work in doubles with Backeberg and Kavali teaming up to win their only match together while Rodriguez paired with
Leyton Dunn to win their only doubles match.
Caleb McElveen and
Charles Parnell also each picked up a singles win, going 1-1 on the weekend.
Freshman
Jack Maddox made his Piedmont debut and picked up his first career singles win, defeating an opponent from Tuskegee.
Up next, the Lions are back in action at the Knapp Family Tennis Invite, hosted by Pfeiffer, set to begin Friday, Sept. 26 in Misenheimer, North Carolina.
