MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Piedmont baseball dropped its first contest of the postseason with a 9-1 loss to Belhaven on a rainy evening in Maryville. The contest had over an hour lightning delay that saw the Scotland Yard field crew tarp the field and send both teams to the locker room.
The delay occurred in the top of the sixth inning after Piedmont plated its first run of the game and had two on with no outs.
Peyton Irvin earned the start for the Lions going five innings, up until the delay, allowing six runs on six hits. The Blazers used a double after a free base in the first to score one and added two more in the third off another double to lead 3-0.
A three-spot in the fifth doubled the lead, but the Lions bounced back with some offense in the sixth before the delay.
Ben Connelly singled and
Cole Ellis doubled to put runners on the corners and a
Carter Few sac fly drove in the first run of the game.
With Ellis at third after the sac fly,
Kyle Carlson was walked to force the Blazers to go to the bullpen. It was good timing as the lightning delay came just after the pitching change and then the two teams sat for close to 80 minutes before play resumed.
Piedmont was unable to capitalize with two on and one away in the top of the sixth off the Blazers reliever. In the home half of the inning,
Averett Thompson entered for the Lions.
In the seventh, A 6-4-3 double play looked to help limit the runs surrendered, but after a pair of walks, Thompson's day was done as
Harris Bryson entered. The Blazers totaled three runs in the seventh to take a 9-1 lead.
Cole Ellis doubled and ultimately reached third in the eighth inning, but the Lions were unable to get him across.
Riley McCallum pitched the eighth inning and allowed just one walk, but the Lions were unable to make anything happen offensively in the top of the ninth.
Up next, the Lions will be right back in action less than 12 hours later on Friday morning facing Maryville in an elimination game at 11:00 a.m.
