MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Piedmont University baseball team kept pace with Maryville for over 11 innings but a 12th inning walkoff eliminated the Lions from the CCS Tournament Friday. Piedmont concludes the year with 27 wins including one in postseason play.
The Lions forced extras after a ninth inning rally with a pair of singles, a sac bunt, and an RBI groundout by
Cole Ellis to tie the game at four.
Braden Simms entered in the eighth for the Lions working four innings as he had a clean eighth and ninth heading into extras.
Trace Cate singled in the 10th and
Jack Ryan was hit by a pitch to put two on with one away.
Tyler Nelson singled to drive in the go-ahead run but the Lions would strand two.
With the lead in the bottom of the 10th, the Scots strung together three singles to plate the tying run. Neither team was able to do anything offensively in the 11th.
In the 12th, Cate singled and stole second before
Tyler Nelson was walked. A
Jack Gilsenan single loaded the bases, but all three Lions were left stranded.
The Scots started the inning with a walk and a bunt attempt was unable to be thrown cleanly to first resulting in no out and the baserunner took third. A single up the middle was enough to drive in the winning run ending the Lions' season.
TURNING POINT:
- In the bottom of the 12th, the Scots were able to string together a walk, a pair of singles and an error to pull off the walkoff win.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

Cody Funk led the team with three hits in the game while it was 4-7 that had the bulk of the RBIs in the contest.
