CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Piedmont men's tennis made quick work of Huntingdon in a 4-0 CCS Tournament First Round win on Saturday morning in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

With the tournament's Thursday schedule altered due to weather, the Lions and Hawks played indoors and an hour earlier than originally scheduled.

However, it did not take Piedmont long to grab control of the match. The No. 2 doubles team of Charles Parnell and Connor Phelps were victorious by a 6-1 margin at No. 2. Then, it was the No. 3 doubles team of Rohan Kavali and Mark Backeberg who clinched the first point, as the sophomores prevailed 6-3. Yannick Wassmer Navarro and Simon Johnstone were knotted 5-5 at No. 1 when the point was clinched.

Needing just three singles matches to take the victory, the Lions were dominant at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4, winning all three in just over an hour to advance to the semifinals.

Wassmer Navarro was first to clinch, with a clinical 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. Just over 15 minutes later, a pair of Piedmont sophomores won in quick succession to give the Lions the match.

Backeberg won first, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 with Parnell quickly on his heels, delivering a 6-2, 6-2 match-clinching victory at No. 2.

With playing courts limited, only one other match was in the second set at the time of the clinch, as Bryce VanOrder was leading 6-0, 4-4 at No. 3. Kavali was just underway in his match, leading 3-1 in the first set while Phelps had yet to take the court at No. 6.

Up next, the Lions will await another showdown with rival Covenant. The Scots have won the last two meetings at the CCS Tournament, with both occurring in the finals in 2023 and 2024.
