DANVILLE, Ky. - Piedmont men's tennis ended the regular season with a step outside of conference play in a 4-1 loss at Centre Wednesday.
In doubles, Centre took the point but it was
Rohan Kavali and
Mark Backeberg at No. 3 who took the first win of the match. Backeberg and Kavali won 6-2 giving Piedmont a shot at claiming doubles.
At No. 1 & No. 2 it was a 6-3 decision in favor of the Colonels as
Yannick Wassmer Navarro and
Simon Johnstone competed at No. 1 and
Bryce VanOrder and
Leyton Dunn held it down at No. 2.
Dunn went straight to work in singles making quick work of it at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-3 win to even the score at 1-1.
Backeberg was in a battle at No. 3 dropping the first set 7-6 (7-2) and was unable to reclaim momentum. Centre took a 3-1 lead after a win at No. 1 as Wassmer Navarro dropped the first set 6-4 before taking the second 6-0, but he was unable to hold off Ben Rueff in a third set dropping it 6-1.
At No. 2, VanOrder was the final match as it was played to clinch due to travel. VanOrder dropped the first set 6-1 but battled in the second ultimately dropping the 7-6 (11-9) decision.
Up next, the Lions will await the announcement of seeding for the CCS Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee beginning Thursday, April 24.
