DEMOREST, Ga. - In a back-and-forth battle that came down to the wire, Piedmont women's lacrosse outlasted Methodist to win an 11-10 thriller on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Demorest.
Although the Lions never trailed in the game, the Monarchs never went away, tying the game at 10-10 with just over four minutes to go. However, junior
Lovette Choloh came through in the clutch, scoring her third and final goal of the game on a free position shot with just over two minutes remaining.
From there, the defense held steady as Piedmont ran out the clock to ice the one goal victory over the Monarchs.
Rachel Verner was outstanding in goal, tying her season high with 13 saves.
Â
Merryn Bumpass joined Choloh in delivering three goals while
Clara Welch and
Savannah Limehouse added two apiece in the win.
Senior
Ava Trankina paced the team with two assists.
After the game was scoreless for over six minutes, Limehouse broke the scoreless tie with her first of the game off a feed from Trankina.
Piedmont was able to answer each and every time Methodist knotted the score early, before using a 3-0 run to jump ahead 5-2.
However, the Monarchs held tough, scoring two in a row to end the first half, including a free position shot goal at the buzzer to make it 6-6 at the break.
Choloh and Limehouse added back-to-back goals to begin the second half scoring and while the Lions led by two going into the final quarter, Methodist was able to battle back with a two in a row midway through the fourth quarter to knot things up at 10-10.
