Records: Piedmont, 13-6 (1-0 CCS); Belhaven, 12-7 (1-3 CCS)

PEARL, Miss. - The Piedmont University baseball team opened league play Friday using a ninth inning rally to claim a 4-3 win at Belhaven. The Lions scored three runs in the top of the ninth to reclaim the lead and earn the victory.

It was a quiet contest until late as Piedmont starter Zeke Swartz threw seven complete allowing just one hit and striking out 10. He got into trouble in the eighth after a leadoff walk and gave way to Braden Simms

Simms surrendered three hits which led to three runs, but with the Piedmont offensive support in the ninth, it was Simms who earned the win.

Piedmont entered the ninth trailing 3-1 but a leadoff walk was a good start for the Lions. Kyle Carlson was walked and then took second on a wild pitch with one away. Sean Bailey singled to put runners on the corners and Cody Funk drove in the first run of the inning.

With the score standing 3-2 and the tying run in scoring position, Ben Connelly singled to send home pinch runner Matt Dupuis and a Trace Cate sac fly proved to be the game winner.

Simms closed out the ninth allowing just one walk.

Piedmont totaled 11 hits in the game while allowing just four with all but one run coming in the final two innings of play. The Lions also left eight on base in the contest to Belhaven's four.

Up next, Piedmont concludes the series with Belhaven with a doubleheader on Saturday.
