Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Belhaven Saturday

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Belhaven 3, Piedmont 1
Score: Belhaven 6, Piedmont 5 F/12
Records: Piedmont, 13-8 (1-2 CCS); Belhaven, 14-7 (3-3 CCS)

PEARL, Miss. - The Piedmont University baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Belhaven Saturday to conclude the opening weekend of conference play. The Lions lost game one 3-1 before it took extra innings to decide game two, ending in favor of the Blazers 6-5 in 12 innings.

Game one: Belhaven 3, Piedmont 1

Piedmont fell victim to an early error that allowed Belhaven to score two runs in the bottom of the first. That was the only scoring until the sixth inning when Piedmont got on the board with a Jack Ryan single driving in Ben Connelly

Peyton Irvin earned the start for Piedmont and went 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run before giving way to Andrew Misirly. Misirly closed out the final 2.2 innings of the game, also not allowing an earned run as an error to leadoff the seventh led to Belhaven's third run of the game.

Both teams finished with a pair of errors in the contest as Belhaven out-hit Piedmont 7-6 in the game. Trace Cate was the lone Lion to record multiple hits finishing 2-for-4.

Game two: Belhaven 6, Piedmont 5 F/12

The Lions fell behind quickly again as Belhaven scored one run in the bottom of the first, but Piedmont was able to answer. A Carter Few double to start the second put him in position to score later in the frame.

It was a repeat performance by both squads as the two were tied at two following the third inning. The Lions took the lead after a pair of hits in the sixth inning plated a run to move ahead 3-2.

Piedmont added runs in the seventh and eighth innings to lead 5-2, but in similar fashion to the series opener between these two, Belhaven used a 3-run eighth inning to keep their hopes alive.

With the contest tied at 5, it took extras to decide. Averett Thompson entered in the ninth and got the Lions out of a jam, and pitched well down the stretch. The Piedmont offense was unable to string anything together and a leadoff error in the 12th proved costly providing the eventual gamewinning run.

Up next, Piedmont hosts Oglethorpe on Thursday at Loudermilk Field at 6 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Belhaven scored a pair of runs early in game one and it was just enough to separate the two teams down the stretch.
- It was a walkoff win in game two for the Blazers after an error to start the 12th inning proved to be the downfall.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Jack Ryan accounted for the lone RBI in game one and went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks in game two.
- Averett Thompson pitched the final 3.2 innings of the second game and while he took the loss he allowed just two hits, no earned runs and struck out one facing 13 batters.
