ATLANTA, Ga. - After a pitcher's duel in game one of the series, the Piedmont University baseball team used an offensive explosion for an 11-5 win at #25 Emory on Saturday. The win marks the fifth of the season over a top-25 ranked foe.
Piedmont scored quickly with a pair of runs in the first inning despite only one hit. A pair of errors helped while
Cole Ellis had an RBI double to drive in
Trace Cate. Emory used three straight singles to score in the bottom of the frame making it 2-1.
In the third, the Lions tacked on two more with a pair of runs on three hits and a
Kyle Carlson solo home run led off the fourth to increase the lead to 5-1. The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the fourth with a homer of their own as Aiden Conley had a 3-run shot to make it 5-4.
Piedmont got one back on a sac fly by
Tucker Ausband in the fifth and Irvin worked a 1-2-3 inning. Emory's final run came in the sixth but Piedmont again answered right back with a
Cody Funk triple driving in Ausband in the seventh.
The offensive explosion came in the eighth inning as Piedmont added four runs on three hits and an error to leave no doubt. With an 11-5 lead,
Andrew Misirly continued his impressive outing to close out the contest on the mound allowing just two hits and two walks to the 15 batters he faced.
The Lions forced Emory to use five pitchers in the contest including three over the final three innings of play.
Emory entered the weekend series averaging over 9.5 runs per game and have been held to just five in the pair of contests so far.
Up next, Piedmont is set to conclude the series at Emory on Sunday at 2 p.m.

- Offense was working early and often but a four run eighth inning for Piedmont left no doubt.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

Cody Funk was 3-for-5 with two RBI in the game as three Lions had multi-hit games.

Peyton Irvin earned his first win of the season in his third start going 5.1 innings while
Andrew Misirly earned his first career save.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont scored 11 runs but left 14 on base in the game as offense was not hard to come by.
