Seven-Run 5th Helps Piedmont Sink Brits in 13-2 Baseball Win Over Albion

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 13, Albion 2
Records: Piedmont, 8-1; Albion, 1-1

DEMOREST, Ga. - On a cloudless, blue-sky Saturday afternoon at Loudermilk Field, the Piedmont University baseball team shot off fireworks in the daylight offensively defeating visiting Albion 13-2 in the second of three home games on the weekend for Piedmont.

The top of the 1st saw a pair of errors that led to a 2-0 Albion lead though that advantage was cut in half in the bottom of the frame with Piedmont scoring its first run of the day.

Piedmont then tacked on three in the home half of the second highlighted by Jack Ryan's double that scored Cody Funk and Cole Ellis to put the Lions up 4-2.

Two more in the 4th on a Jack Ryan sac fly and a Kyle Carlson RBI-single put the Lions up 6-2 and seemingly in control of the contest they once trailed.

But any doubt would be removed in the 5th as Piedmont pounded home plate relentlessly with runs scored led off by a RBI-double from Ellis, one of four Lions to pick up hits in the inning as they went round the order before being retired.

The RBI hits were spread out in the 5th with several getting past the outfielders and either bouncing off of or over the outfield wall.

Starting pitcher Bodie Eilertson would not need that much insurance to pick up the win on the mound for Piedmont as he only allowed a pair of runs, both unearned back in the 1st.

Eilertson went six complete before youngster Andrew Misirly would come on for the 7th inning to retire three of the four batters he faced as Piedmont won the shortened affair 13-2 after seven invoking the run rule.

Up next, the Lions will face Greensboro to end weekend action at the Jug on Sunday at 2 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Someone forgot to turn off the merry-go-round in the 5th as Piedmont turned a 6-2 Saturday matinee into a 13-2 rout hitting around the order with RBI base knocks that included two doubles on a day when extra-base hits were a plenty through the home team lineup.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Take your pick offensively from Trace Cate's 3-for-4 day with a pair of ribby's and a run scored or Ben Connelly who mirrored his teammate except with the addition of a run scored for two himself.
- On the mound, the Lions needed just one arm to get through the first six innings with Bodie Eilertson striking out four and allowing only a pair of runs, both unearned, as the Lawrenceville native moved to 2-0 on the year.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The bottom of the 5th was something to behold for the home crowd as the Lions batted around with four different Lions picking up hits led by Ben Connelly who doubled to lead off the inning and singled home two of his teammates later in the frame.
- Six of the seven runs Piedmont scored in the 5th came with two outs on the scoreboard.
- The Brittons were sat down in order by Eilertson in the 2nd, 4th and 5th innings.
