DEMOREST, Ga. - In the first game of a three-game weekend tournament in Demorest, Piedmont baseball won a back-and-forth battle, 7-5, over Bridgewater on Friday afternoon.
Trace Cate led the way offensively, falling just a double shy of the cycle with a homer, triple and single, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Zeke Swartz was solid on the mound, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing just two earned runs with eight strikeouts. 
With one on and one out in the top of the first, Swartz surrendered a two-run blast to make it 2-0 Eagles. However, Piedmont answered back immediately with a two-run bottom of the frame, highlighted by Cate's RBI triple that brought home 
Cody Funk.
Piedmont took a one run lead into the sixth, but the Eagles were able to chase Swartz in the seventh by pushing across the go-ahead run. In relief of Swartz, right-hander 
Jackson Randolph limited the damage and kep tthe Lions in the contest.
That set the stage for Cate's big blast, a two-out, two-run homer to turn a one-run Piedmont deficit into a one-run lead at 6-5.
While the Eagles were able to scratch across the tying run against 
Braden Simms in the eighth, Piedmont was once again up to the task, as 
Cruz Mullinix and 
Cole Ellis delivered back-to-back RBI singles and Simms closed the door in the ninth to give Piedmont its first home win of 2025.
Up next, the Lions take on Albion on Saturday at noon at the Jug.

Cole Ellis proved to be the decisive at bats in the game.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Cate launched his second home run of the season in the seventh inning, tripled in the first and added a single as well in a 3-for-4 performance.
- Piedmont pitchers Swartz, Randolph and Simms combined to strike out 11 Bridgewater hitters against just two walks.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
