DEMOREST, Ga. - In the 2025 home opener, the Piedmont University baseball team was unable to complete a late comeback in a 7-6 loss to Hanover. The loss is the first of the season for the Lions who move to 6-1.
Piedmont was able to quickly get on the board with a run in the first after three singles and an error. The Panthers answered back to knot the score at 1-1 with a home run to right in the top of the second, but the Piedmont offense got back to work.
Without a hit in the second inning, Piedmont added a run after a walk, sac bunt and an error helped push a run across. Piedmont led 3-1 after the fourth inning but starter
Peyton Irvin got in some trouble in the fifth causing Head Coach
Justin Scali to bring in
Layne Ayers.
Ayers allowed just one hit and struck out a pair of batters to end the threat and keep Piedmont in front 3-2. The Lions again were able to answer in the home half without a hit as there were two HBPs and two walks in the inning.
Piedmont seemed to be in control with a 4-2 lead but the seventh inning proved costly. The Lions surrendered five runs on two hits and an error in the inning with two walks and a hit by pitch.
Hanover claimed a 7-4 lead thanks to that and Piedmont was fighting from behind. After a 1-2-3 inning in both the seventh and eighth, it all came down to the ninth.
Piedmont drove in one run after a wild pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-5. Another walk loaded the bases for pinch hitter
Davin Miller who also earned a walk to drive in another run making it 7-6.
With the bases loaded and only one out,
Cole Ellis ground out into a 5-3 double play to end the comeback and seal the 7-6 final.
Up next, the Lions will be in action at home over the weekend inside the Jug facing Bridgewater on Friday at noon.
