MEMPHIS, Tenn. - In the 2025 spring opener, Piedmont men's tennis fell to Rhodes 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Lions were unable to recover from losing the doubles point, as the Lynx quickly rolled to three straight set wins at the top three singles lines to clinch at 4-0.
Piedmont was able to claim two of the final three singles lines however as
Charles Parnell took No. 5 6-3, 6-4 and
Connor Phelps was able to grind out a gritty come-back win at No 6 in a third-set tiebreaker after dropping the first set 6-4.
In the new best-of-three doubles format for a single point, Piedmont quickly took the first match as
Mark Backeberg and
Yannick Wassmer Navarro delivered a 6-3 win at No. 2. However, Rhodes responded by taking the matches at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the doubles point and lead 1-0 heading into singles.
Playing on only three courts at a time, the Lynx took advantage, quickly taking the match with three-set victories at No. 2, No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.
Up next, the Lions will face Hendrix on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Memphis.Â
