SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • After scoring 12 times in a season-opening rout of Trinity Washington Friday afternoon, the Lions wasted no time in jumping out to another multiple goal lead on Saturday, scoring twice in the first half and two more times in the second to pull away from the Royals.
  • Senior Savannah Jerome found the back of the net off a cross in the game's 23rd minute. Then, just 15 minutes later, sophomore Alison Witkiewicz scored the first of her two goals on the day, putting away a bouncing ball in the box to make it 2-0 Piedmont, which carried into halftime.
  • The 2-0 lead for the Lions was added on to just over 11 minutes into the second half. Off a Regent goal kick, Piedmont newcomer Adriana Blumer was able to deliver a quick takeaway and beat the goalkeeper low and left for her first goal in a Piedmont uniform.
  • However, the scoring did not stop there, as Witkiewicz added her second of the day by putting away a mad scramble in the box off a Piedmont corner.

  • The Lions left no doubt from the beginning, scoring early in the first half, early in the second half and a final exclamation mark to make it 3-0 late on a penalty kick.
  • The three-goal performance from Piedmont marks the most goals it has scored against Covenant since the 2013 season, which was the only other time in the matchup history in which the Lions reached at least three goals.
  • Sierra Judson got the scoring started for Piedmont, unleashing a rocket from just outside the box that the Covenant goalkeeper was able to get hands on but not enough to keep it out of the net as the Lions built a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
  • Out of the locker room, Piedmont asserted its will again. This time, it was freshman Genesis Gamez who dribbled her way through what seemed like the entire Covenant team, finishing off the play with a beautiful cross that was put away by senior Jocelyn Maseda.
  • With the 2-0 advantage, the Lions continued to pour it on, earning a penalty kick opportunity in the 67th minute, with sophomore Summer Huskin converting the opportunity for her first career goal.

  • In what will officially go down as the team's first draw of the season, the Lions and Panthers engaged in a defensive battle for 110 minutes, forcing the game to end in the penalty shootout.
  • After falling behind early in the shootout, the Lions battled back, as sophomore Alison Witkiewicz took advantage of her opportunity to send the Lions to the CCS Tournament Semifinals.
  • Goalkeeper Hannah Thompson was all over the field on Saturday, starting the game as a forward, before entering in the second half.
  • The senior came away with a crucial save off of the Panthers' best chance, diving to steal away an opportunity and keep the game scoreless late in regulation.
  • Then, in the penalty shootout, she came through again, getting a piece of a LaGrange attempt enough to cause it to deflect off the crossbar, setting up Witkiewicz's big moment.
