DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont volleyball hosted its first CCS Tri-Match of the season on Saturday inside Cave Arena, falling to both Covenant and LaGrange.
The Lions battled the Scots tough, taking a set to force the match to a fourth before dropping a three-set match to the Panthers to close out the day.
Match 1: Covenant 3, Piedmont 1
While the Lions hung in with the Scots throughout most of the first set, Covenant took nine of the final 10 points to escape with a first set victory.
Then, with the momentum on their side, the Scots raced out to an early lead and never trailed in the second set, closing it out 25-13.
However, Piedmont flipped the script in the third set, avoiding the sweep with a strong finish thanks to late kills by
Sara Bjerke,
Katie Hubbard and
Kya Perkinson.
Unfortunately, the Lions were unable to capitalize, as the Scots took control of the fourth set early and never looked back on their way to a 25-17 win in the fourth to end the match.
Hubbard led the way in the first match of the day, recording a season-high 14 kills to go with a solid .233 hitting percentage.
Erin Lemons (11 digs, 14 assists) and
Lauren Caricato (11 digs, 10 assists) each delivered double-doubles to aid the cause.
Match 2: LaGrange 3, Piedmont 0
After LaGrange battled Covenant but fell in five sets in the middle match of the day, the Lions returned to the court against an in rhythm Panthers' squad.
LaGrange raced out of the gate in the opening set, taking eight of the first nine points before closing out at 25-15.
The second set also saw the Panthers run away early, putting them one set away from winning the match.
However, Piedmont responded with a strong start to the third set, leading 13-6 in the early going before the Panthers found their footing and won the match with a late third set comeback.
Zoe Coelho delivered a solid defensive performance, with 23 digs for the match.
Up next, Piedmont will be back on the road early next week, taking on Agnes Scott next Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
