ATLANTA - Piedmont volleyball fell in three sets in a non-conference road match at Oglethorpe Sunday afternoon.
Fresh off a doubleheader on Saturday against CCS foe Asbury and Huntingdon, the Lions made the short trip to Atlanta to face off with the Stormy Petrels.
After a slow start in the first set, the Lions battled to the end of a grueling second set. Piedmont fell behind 17-10 midway through the set, but roared back into the set thanks to a 6-0 scoring run to cut its deficit to one at 17-16.
Then, a kill by
Sara Bjerke followed by a
Katie Hubbard service ace knotted the score at 18-all. The comeback attempts were not done, with the Stormy Petrels separating with a 23-19 advantage.
Piedmont was undeterred, however, saving a pair of set point and taking a 25-24 lead. The back-and-forth continued as Oglethorpe saved a few set points of its own, eventually prevailing 28-26 to take a 2-0 match lead.
Although Piedmont jumped ahead to an early 7-4 lead in the third set, Oglethorpe answered immediately with a 7-0 run of its own to take control of the set and never look back on the way to a third set victory by a 25-18 margin.
Even in defeat, a number of Lions delivered standout performances as
Zoe Coelho continued her fantastic senior season, leading the team with 26 digs. On the offensive end, Bjerke recorded seven kills for the second consecutive match while Hubbard and
Kya Perkinson added five each.
