Volleyball Battles Asbury, Huntingdon in CCS Tri-Match

NEED TO KNOW:
Match 1 Score: Asbury 3, Piedmont 0
Match 2 Score: Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 0
Record: Piedmont, 4-19 (2-8 CCS)

DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont volleyball dropped a pair of home conference matches Saturday in its final CCS Tri-Match of the season at Cave Arena.

The Lions were unable to find their footing in a three-set loss to conference-leading Asbury in the first match of the day before showing fight against Huntingdon in the second match, but ultimately falling in three sets.

Match 1: Asbury 3, Piedmont 0

The Eagles took control of the first two sets in the early going and never looked back, cruising to a 2-0 lead in the match.

However, the Lions showed resilience in the third set, battling back to cut into the Asbury deficit in the middle of the set. Unfortunately, the Eagles recovered with a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 19-9 and close out the match.

Katie Hubbard led the team with four kills while three-time CCS Defensive Player of the Week Zoe Coelho paced the team with 13 digs.

Match 2: Huntingdon 3, Piedmont 0

Against the Hawks, the Lions fought tough in a back-and-forth opening set. Piedmont used a 4-0 run midway through the set to cut its deficit to 15-13 before Huntingdon responded with a strong close to win it 25-18.

Piedmont held steady in the second set as well, jumping out to a 6-4 edge and leading 17-14 at one point.

However, Huntingdon reeled off five consecutive points to flip the script and lead 19-17.

Kills by Hubbard and Kya Perkinson, followed by a service ace from Sara Bjerke put the Lions back in front at 20-19.

Unfortunately, the Hawks were undeterred, winning six of the final seven points to take the set and control of the match.

Although the Hawks were able to run away with the final set, the Lions had a number of impressive individual performances.

Hubbard and Bjerke tied for the team lead with seven kills each, while three Lions reached double digits in digs, led by Coelho's 17.

Up next, the Lions are back in action with a non-conference single road match tomorrow, taking a trip to Oglethorpe with a 12:30 p.m. scheduled start time.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Hubbard's 12 digs in the second match of the day gives her double digits in the category for the second time in the past three matches.
- Coelho led the team with 30 digs on the day, leading the team in both matches.
