BEREA, Ky. - In a non-conference tune up before a CCS Tri-Match Saturday, Piedmont volleyball battled but fell in three sets at Berea on Friday night in Kentucky.
Taking on their former CCS rival, the Lions were competitive in all three sets against the Mountaineers, but were unable to pull off a set as Berea escaped with the victory.
Despite the loss, it was a strong defensive performance for the Lions, who tallied 79 digs, a team-high for the season in a three-set match.
Once again, Piedmont was led on that front by senior libero
Zoe Coelho, as the three-time CCS Defensive Player of the Week totaled 27, giving her nine matches this season with 20 or more.
Sophomore
Erin Lemons also delivered a standout performance, finishing one assist shy of another double double, with 14 digs and nine assists on the day.
On the offensive side, the Lions spread the wealth, with six Lions tallying either three or four kills on the evening.
After Berea ran away with the first set, the Lions began to show resistance in the second set, battling back from an early deficit to knot the score at 19-19. Unfortunately, Berea was able to win three of the final four points to win 25-22 and take a 2-0 match lead.
Piedmont was even closer in the third set, using another late comeback to even the score at 23-all. However, once again, the Mountaineers came through in the clutch with the final two points to close out the match.
Up next, the Lions are back in action tomorrow with a CCS Tri-Match, taking on Huntingdon at 2 p.m. and host school Asbury at 4 p.m.
