Volleyball Opens CCS Play at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. - After over a week off, the Piedmont volleyball team was in action to open CCS play on Sunday. The Lions dropped a pair of matches by a score of 3-1 to Maryville and Belhaven on the road in Jackson, Mississippi. 

Match one: Maryville 3, Piedmont 1

The Lions were off to a strong start dropping the opening set 26-24, forcing the Scots into extra points. Piedmont used that near win to push them to even the match with a 25-21 win in the second set. 

In the third and fourth sets though, the Lions were not able to keep pace with the Scots with a 25-13 loss and a 25-10 fourth set. 

Piedmont totaled 33 kills in the match led by Jessica Sconyers with 10. The Lions posted 13 kills in that second-set victory. 

Vanessa Manzo led Piedmont with 22 assists, three aces and posted eight assists behind Zoe Coelho's 16.

Match two: Belhaven 3, Piedmont 1

It was not a fast start for Piedmont in the second match of the day with a 25-11 loss, but bounced back for a 25-19 loss in the second set. 

In the third, the Lions were able to pull ahead and claim a win 25-21, but dropped the fourth set 25-18 to lose the match. 

Piedmont posted 36 kills in the match against the Blazers as Sconyers again added 10, with Katie Hubbard reaching double digits with 10 as well. 

Belhaven had 14 aces to Piedmont's three. 

Up next, Piedmont travels to Wesleyan for a conference meeting with the Wolves on Wednesday, October 2 at 6 p.m.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Jessica Sconyers posted 10 kills in each of the matches on Sunday. 
--Katie Hubbard totaled 18 kills as well. 
--Vanessa Manzo led Piedmont with 54 assists on Sunday. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 
--Piedmont posted a positive attack percentage in all but the third set against Maryville. 
--The Lions did not have a negative attack percentage in any set against Belhaven.
