DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University baseball team captured a 6-2 win over Huntingdon to claim the series Saturday. The Lions move to 11-3 in league play and are one of two team with 11 wins in the CCS standings.
Bodie Eilertson did not surrender a hit until the third inning with Piedmont already on the board. The Lions capitalized in the second to take the lead with two runs on two hits as
Mac Barton hit an RBI single and with
Kolton Hicks at the plate, a wild pitch drove in
Tyler Nelson.
Trace Cate continued the offensive attack with a two-run home run in the third inning to put the Lions ahead 4-0. Piedmont tacked on another run in the fifth with a walk issued to
Kyle Carlson with the bases loaded to take a 5-0 advantage.
The Hawks gained momentum in the sixth scoring two runs off Eilertson before
Peyton Irvin entered with two outs and two on. He got the final out of the frame and pitched three total innings of scoreless ball before giving way to
Braden Simms for the final out.
Simms earned his 11th save of the season pitching to just one batter with a strikeout.
The Lions had added an insurance run in the seventh after an error with runners in scoring position.
Up next, Piedmont will host Huntingdon on Sunday for the home finale and honor 11 seniors prior to the first pitch at 1 p.m.
