DEMOREST, Ga. - In a pair of games that came down to the wire, the Piedmont University baseball team excelled late to claim the series sweep of Covenant on Saturday. Piedmont was able to come from behind or take the lead in the eighth inning of both contests to claim a 9-7 win and a 7-3 victory in game two.

Game one: Piedmont 9, Covenant 7

In another back-and-forth battle, the Lions came out on top with another late-inning rally to start off Saturday.

After the first two Scots reached against Piedmont starter Bodie Eilertson, Covenant plated the first run on a groundout double play. However, from there, Eilertson settled down, throwing up scoreless frames through the fifth inning. The Lions saw their offense come to life as they manufactured a run in the third and then took the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs capped by an Isaak Mullanack RBI single.

Unfortunately, Eilertson was chased from the game in the sixth inning as the Scots took back the momentum with a five-run inning to grab a 6-3 lead.

Trailing going into the late innings, Piedmont immediately began to chip away with two runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to just one at 6-5.

While the Scots added an insurance run with a sac fly in the top of the eighth to lead by two, the Lions responded by going to work against the Scots bullpen in the eighth. Two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases and with one out, Mullanack was also hit by a pitch to cut the deficit to one. However, the Lions were not done, as the Lions took advantage of another Covenant error to plate the tying run. Then, it was Tyler Nelson's turn to play hero, as the junior catcher laced a two-RBI double to give Piedmont the lead.

After earning the win in Friday night's walk-off, closer Braden Simms entered and without much drama, closed out the Scots in the ninth to clinch the series win for Piedmont.

Game two: Piedmont 7, Covenant 3

In game two, it was quiet early as the game was scoreless entering the fifth inning. Adam Metivier surrendered two hits in the first inning and did not give up another until a lead-off homerun in the fifth inning.

That was the first run of the game, but Piedmont was able to respond offensively in the home half putting up three runs on three hits. James Whitmer belted a double to drive in Kolton Hicks to tie the contest, followed by a Cole Harof single to put runners on the corners with one away.

Mac Barton laced a double to drive in Whitmer and take the lead while a groundout by Spencer Muffuletto drove home Harof for the third run of the inning.

Leading 3-1, Metivier ran into trouble in the seventh loading the bases and giving up one run before the Lions made the call to the bullpen. Peyton Irvin entered and limited the damage allowing one inherited runner to score and tie the contest at three.

Piedmont went in order in the seventh but Irvin was able to accomplish the same feat in the top of the eighth with a strikeout to end the inning.

The Lions offense was electric in the eighth inning scoring four runs on five hits and two errors to break the tie and seal the victory. Braden Simms closed out the contest facing the final two batters after Irvin loaded the bases with one out. The save for Simms was his second of the day and his ninth of the season.

Up next, the Lions step outside of conference play to take on Oglethorpe on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m.
